On Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015, the International Paralympic Committee announced that it has suspended Alexander Zverev, a Russian Paralympic sprinter, for violating a rule of the World Anti-Doping Agency.

On June 20, Zverev provided a urine sample to the IPC, after he had already competed in the T13 classification for visually impaired athletes at the IPC Athletics Grand Prix in Germany. The sample later tested positive for cannabinoids. The IPC adheres to WADA’s World Anti-Doping Code, with cannabinoids being on WADA’s list of “substances prohibited in-competition.”

Zverev has been suspended from further competition until May 5, 2016. Starting from the date of his urine test, all of Zverev’s competitive results will be disqualified.

Zverev placed second in the Men’s 400 meters T13 event at the 2012 Paralympics in London, and he placed first in the Men’s 200 meters T13 event at the 2014 Paralympics European Championship in Swansea, Wales.
