On April 7, 2016, the South Carolina Senate Medical Affairs Committee rejected S 0672, a bill that would legalize medical marijuana for patients suffering from debilitating conditions, such as cancer, PTSD and chronic pain. The committee voted 7-4 against the measure, citing concerns about diversion and fears it would lead to full legalization.

Despite the setback, medical marijuana advocate Jill Swing told WLTX that the fight was not yet over.

“We’re not completely dead-in-the-water yet because there is a companion bill in the House that has also already passed subcommittee, so I think what we do is go over to the House side and try to get them to push the bill from over there,” Swing said.

Swing went on to say that advocates would also continue to lobby the Senate, who would still need to approve the legislation.
