While Prince Edward Island legalization will happen in conjunction with Canada in July 2018, the province is taking a proactive measure in the development of its jurisdiction-specific regulations.

On Aug. 31, 2017, the Government of Prince Edward Island announced that it is seeking input from Islanders on the province’s plans for rolling out recreational cannabis.

According to the provincial government’s press release, “To ensure that the legalization of cannabis is done with the best interest of Islanders in mind, government is asking Islanders to share their thoughts on how to approach cannabis legalization in a way that keeps drugs away from our young people, protects public health, and promotes safety on our roads, in workplaces and in public spaces.”

Islanders have until Sept. 30 to complete the survey, answering questions on legal age, retail locations, public consumption, home grows, taxation, road safety and education, among others.

Canada introduced recreational cannabis legislation on April 13, 2017, with an implementation deadline of July 2018. While the country is responsible for implementing federal guidelines for a national framework, provinces and territories have several jurisdictional responsibilities such as public health, zoning, compliance and beyond.

If a province or territory neglects to implement regulations, adult residents of that jurisdiction will be allowed to buy recreational cannabis online from a federally licensed producer; however, Prince Edward Island legalization is on schedule with the country’s implementation timeline.
