Las Vegas Airport Banning Possession and Advertisement of Cannabis

It looks like cannabis travelers and advertisers will have to be more conscientious when using the Las Vegas airport. On Sept. 5, 2017, Clark County commissioners approved a measure to ban both possession and advertisement of cannabis at McCarran International Airport, as reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The commissioners met last month to settle the matter of Las Vegas airport ads, but opted to put the problem on hold until the language of the anticipated laws had been polished by the Aviation Department and the district attorney.

The newly approved ban doesn’t just affect the airport, but airport-owned property within Clark County limits. Commissioners came to the decision in an effort to have the McCarran International Airport rules be in accordance with that of federal law.

“I think common sense won,” said Commissioner Jim Gibson, who debated the need for more flexible rules last month.

Commissioner Larry Brown also voted yes for the ban, but voiced his worries about the approval possibly being a “slippery slope.” Though the commissioners banned advertisements within the airport, Brown is concerned mobile billboards will be driven around the airport in an effort to attract tourists.

“We don’t want McCarran Airport to become the pilot program where people start challenging the gray area of the legal industry,” Brown said.

After meeting with representatives from the marijuana industry, Brown said he felt better about the situation.

“They agreed that we need to kind of set the boundaries and encourage all the (marijuana industry) membership to stay within the boundaries,” Brown said. “That way if we can agree on the front end we can identify when someone pushes the envelope too far.”

According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, those who break the new law could face the penalty of both a misdemeanor and civil fine.
